Description: Project 1619, is a 501 c-3 non-profit organization, organized to promote Hampton’s rich African-American history. The organization is composed of prominent Hampton, local, regional and national leaders recognized in the areas of historical preservation and interpretation, education, resource development, special events, and marketing. Our main vision will be to construct a National Monument at Fort Monroe by 2019 to honor and remember the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans on English occupied territory at Point Comfort in 1619. Secondary projects will be promoting the birth of William Tucker in Hampton and his legacy as being the first documented child of African descent born in America; promoting our local Contraband of War heritage; and remembering the victims of the Transatlantic slave trade that still impacts our lives. This is America’s history and our goal is to let the world know that the “Birth of Africa in America” started in Hampton, Virginia. Our national fundraising goal is to raise $1 Million dollars to commission, fabricate and install the National Monument at Fort Monroe in 2019 when our country remembers the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans in British America. Our goal is to produce at least one major event a year as a fundraiser for the National Monument. Each August 20th on the anniversary date of the first landing we sponsor African Landing Commemoration Day that includes a symposium, jazz concert and prayer service. The purpose of the event is to provide historical documentation on the first Africans and subsequent impact on America. Our goal is to work with individuals, businesses and organizations to create a collaborative coalition to share resources, create events, and be a historical clearing house on the African Diaspora and its cultural and economic impact on America’s legacy. We need support in raising money for the monument and promoting the history of the first landing.
