About Immigrant Defense Project

Immigrant Defense Project, immigrant Immigrant Defense Project IDP promotes fundamental fairness for immigrants accused or convicted of crimes. We seek to minimize the harsh and disproportionate immigration consequences of contact with the criminal justice system by 1) working to transform unjust deportation laws and policies and 2) educating and advising immigrants, their criminal defenders, and other advocates. In pursuit of these goals, we: serve as a legal resource and training center for criminal defense attorneys, advocates, and immigrants and their loved ones, challenge overreaching government interpretations of criminal-immigration laws through impact litigation, engage in policy advocacy efforts to scale back criminal grounds of deportation and to return to a more proportional, fair, and discretionary immigration system, and build the capacity of community-based organizations to understand and respond to criminal-immigration issues.
