The Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (AP R2P) is the only regional centre of its kind specifically dedicated to advancing the responsibility to protect principle through research and policy dialogue. The Centre was officially launched in February 2008 by Former Foreign Minister of Canada, Lloyd Axworthy and former Special Advisor to the Secretary General on R2P, Dr Edward Luck. The Centre’s capacity to develop, expand and sustain its research and outreach work was made possible by a three-year grant from the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) in June 2009. In July 2012, the Centre received a second three-year grant, now funded by the Australian Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to work in partnership with colleagues at Griffith University's Griffith Asia Institute to expand and deepen our research, training and policy engagement on R2P. The Centre is an associate of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P) and a member of the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect (ICRtoP)-which are both based in New York and a member of the Consortium on Non-Traditional Security in Asia (NTS-Asia) based in Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. In 2009 the Centre administered the Australian R2P Fund, which funded fourteen two-year projects to advance understanding of the R2P doctrine and support states to build capacity in the region to prevent genocide and mass atrocities. The Centre looks to these partnerships, as well as the contributions of our Centre Research Fellows and advice of our International Advisory Board, to enhance our ability to promote a shared consensus on the value of R2P and generate creative policy recommendations to make a material difference in the lives of at-risk civilian populations.
