Description: The Drammeh Institute, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) registered New York State charity and international NGO with Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations, formally established in 1993 to develop and collect moving image historiographies and create pathways for collaborations with independent documentary filmmakers. MISSION The Drammeh Institute's mission is to preserve the documentary heritage of the black experience through the moving image (i.e. film and video), encourage accurate representation in media, and challenge misleading notions about Africa and its Diaspora by providing reliable content on current concerns as a means to empower the voices of historically underserved communities. VISION The Drammeh Institute's vision is to contribute positively to international culture through the development and support of humanities-based projects that connect scholarly, ethno-classical traditions with grassroots voices and interpretations, in a human to human way as opposed to a human to textbook fashion. Activities Include: Research and documentary development. Secure acquisitions of primary sourced moving images for applied research, future study and educational purposes. Train developers how to assemble research around a moving image project. Support and organize events that commemorate and celebrate significant events through the moving image. Network with neighboring community groups, education programs, and international NGO's on related topics. The Drammeh Institute’s international initiative works in the spirit of advocacy and collaboration with cultural and humanitarian groups and leaders to facilitate the documentation of perspectives in regions where information has been ignored or unknown. These moving image records span from voices celebrating and calling for an agenda of renaissance and development, to resistance, peace and restorative justice. All of which contribute to a broader narrative of the global black experience.
